Prior to America you had attempts that gave us the basic structure and you had the great philosophers of the Enlightenment that gave us Classical Liberalism, but to join that together and have people agree to it was never done.
Once we achieved our independence, the countdown started on the end of slavery as built into our Constitution.
There's only ONE Race. Superficial differences do not change the fact that we are all related and don't need to go that far back in lineage. The Thousand Genome Project has revealed a whole new picture of who we are. It further reveals the ignorance of people that base there views of others predominately on these surface level differences. You may be more closely related to someone with the greatest difference in melanin levels than with the person of like level sitting across from you.
