Before America, God given rights were not acknowledged by governments. You had the right to ask your ruler if it's alright.
Prior to America you had attempts that gave us the basic structure and you had the great philosophers of the Enlightenment that gave us Classical Liberalism, but to join that together and have people agree to it was never done.
Once we achieved our independence, the countdown started on the end of slavery as built into our Constitution.
